Human Literacy provides a really great platform for students to think about, reflect on and understand themselves and others. It allows them to understand what their contribution and their values are, not only the value of their own life but the value to the community and even going beyond.

I have observed an increase in the engagement of students in the writing process. This, coupled with the idea of mindful writing that has been implemented in the classroom, has resulted in an increase in students choosing to engage in writing activities when given the option of choosing between various activities to demonstrate understanding. It has been particularly effective with novice learners and their confidence in their abilities in writing.
Learning about the Human Literacy Pedagogy was an eye opener for me as a teacher. One of the most significant things it did was to help me “get out of the way” and allow students to learn at their own pace. Throughout my professional learning about Human Literacy, I came to see how much teachers slow down their students’ ability to learn.
The improvement in behaviour and productivity that comes as a result is amazing. A truly unexpected surprise, was the closeness of the relationships within the class.
Human Literacy is one of the most valuable pedagogies I have been professionally involved in. In the school setting, it improves behaviours and relationships, while empowering students to become confident learners. The beauty is that the students are being taught life-long skills which will help them to be more productive members of society.
